What you will do:
We have a new opportunity for an Energy Insurance Risk Engineer to join our team in London. This role involves providing expert engineering advice to our Energy broking team, aimed at enhancing business income and supporting portfolio development and new business opportunities on a global scale.
The primary responsibilities include conducting risk assessments of broker submissions and performing risk/loss prevention surveys for Upstream Energy risks. Additionally, the successful candidate will support the broader Energy Engineering team, including Downstream, Midstream, and Power risks, as their experience grows.
- Contribute to the development and review of global risk engineering strategy, policies and processes
- Working independently, plan, organise and perform desk-based risk appraisals for assigned line/s of business to provide risk analysis.
- Conduct on site Risk Engineering surveys of both Upstream Construction and Upstream (Oil and Gas) Operational assets. Deliverables will include producing broker Risk Engineering reports and risk improvement recommendations that will assist the client in reducing risk and assist in placing the risk in the London market.
- Follow-up on key recommendations and ensure risk engineering information on file is up to date
- Provide technical input on Claims, including reviewing loss adjuster reports and focussed site visits to identify areas for Claims mitigation and recommendations for improvement
- Maintain strong working relationships with managers and leaders within the brokers and claims functions
- Reviewing and agreeing Scopes of Work for third party consultants as needed, including MWS Companies and Well Plan Review Consultants.
- Continual learning through a thirst for knowledge to support the engineering team’s understanding of new and existing technologies. Recent examples of this include developing a deep understanding of carbon capture technologies and geothermal projects. This role provides opportunities to broaden beyond traditional oil and gas activities.
- Support the wider Energy floors and Engineering team in other occupancies as experience allows.
- Maintain a strong understanding of engineering technologies and external market developments and trends to make recommendations on how these can be implemented across client base
- Support the brokers in discussions with the client, Underwriter and Underwriter’s risk engineers and local broker Risk Engineers.
- Conduct risk surveys of Upstream Energy risks including offshore (BOSIET, and the offshore medical will be arranged by Price Forbes)
- Compile risk engineering survey reports as required.
- Complete calculations of EML (estimated maximum loss) assessments, and attractional loss estimates, with the support of modelling software such as ExTool as applicable.
- To provide technical input to the claims department
- Develop training presentations for Energy peer group engineers and broker and underwriters.
What you will bring:
- A minimum of 8 years’ experience in the oil and gas production and construction industry, including working offshore and onshore oil & gas production facilities and projects
- Knowledge of Offshore (and onshore) well risks both in the drilling and operational phases. Good working knowledge of control of well risks and appropriate risk mitigation measures.
- Knowledge of Marine Transit and Installation risks (exposures and mitigation) as they apply to offshore construction risks.
- Knowledge of Upstream operational risks (exposures and mitigation) as they apply to upstream onshore and offshore assets.
- Knowledge of the Energy Insurance industry would also be an advantage, but is not essential.
- Relevant Engineering degree preferred eg BSc /BEng Chemical Engineering, BSc/ BEng Mechanical Engineering etc.
- Chartered status (C.Eng.) of a recognised engineering institution preferred eg MIMechE, MIChemE, MIStructE, MICE or similar.
- Clear and confident communicator with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences. The successful candidate will be expected to act as a mentor to other members of the wider Energy team and respond flexibly to requests for engineering support.
- Extensive experience in relevant process industries and should have a background in at least one of the following areas in a technical role; Operations, Maintenance, Process Engineering, Loss Prevention, Construction, Wells Engineering, Risk Management and Project Management
- Practical experience of risk engineering methods and techniques and the identification and quantification of risks. E.g HAZOP, PHAa, LOPA, etc
- Demonstrated strong communication skills to develop and maintain relationships with Brokers, Claims teams, Clients and fellow Risk Engineers externally
- The skills and presence to interact with authority with middle and senior technical and operational management in client and underwriter organisations
- Experience of risk engineering in the insurance industry with an operating company, loss adjuster or similar would be beneficial.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively use required software applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite. Should be able to create/modify documents and complex spreadsheets
Travel Requirements.
Travel will be expected on a global basis to survey risks brokered by Price Forbes. Expected time away on surveys will be up to 60 days per annum. Risk surveys could involve travel for up to 10 days at a time (on occasion) although most risk surveys will be of 3 to 5 days duration
